Initially I had seen a reddit post about using a server rack to house a couple 3d printers. I really liked the idea, so I went out and found a super cheap enclosure on marketplace. Knowing nothing I found this old AMCO rack that uses an antiquated slide over rack nut. Trying to figure out how old this thing was I reached out to the manufacturer. after quite a while they wrote back that this thing was from the 80s.
In the process of prettying it up, I went and painted it in a few coats of black. unfortunately, my application was not very consistent overall and it is shiny in some places, and matte in others.
To add a modern splash to it I have routed a rgb-led strip light through the frame. it looks very nice to have the ambient illumination shining from the front posts when all the other lights are off!
I have gone and moved my gigantic desktop onto a shelf in the rack. Eventually I will be building a new main computer into an actual rack mounted case. But in preparation for that eventuality, I needed a solution to have the usb extender that I am using placed inside of the case. I had to mash some models I found together to create a keystone pcie cover. this has created a very clean and serviceable setup for my usb connection back to my desk.
Right now, my goal is to expand my home network ecosystem. I was given some Ubiquiti Unifi access points to upgrade my wifi as I had some dead spots. as soon as I had them setup using the app and the cotroller software I was hooked on the idea of using enterprise class hardware. Not long after I went and picked up a security gateway to add into my system. but in doing this I learned very quickly that all in one devices do not ike being downgraded to functioning just as a switch. Due to that issue a cheap unmanaged switch was grabbed in order to get the smart rg router combo out of the way.
